About the Role

As a Technician, you'll work closely with our team leaders and operatives to deliver routine maintenance, inspections, and repairs to the track network. You'll be responsible for ensuring the Permanent Way (P-Way) is in good condition, which includes inspecting and repairing rails, sleepers, and ballast.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Conduct regular inspections of the track network to identify potential issues
  2. Carry out repairs and maintenance to the track, including replacing rails, sleepers, and ballast
  3. Work safely and efficiently, often in challenging weather conditions
  4. Collaborate with the team to ensure safe and efficient work delivery
  5. Develop your skills and competencies relevant to your discipline, keeping up to date with new standards, procedures, and instructions

Requirements

  • Leadership skills: able to lead, motivate, and direct a team for safe and efficient work delivery
  • Effective communication skills: able to deliver clear instructions to the team and other colleagues
  • Technical skills: knowledge and experience of inspection, faulting, maintenance, and renewal techniques in the discipline
  • Safety: consistently role model safe behaviours, able to arrange and implement safe systems of work, and confident to challenge if a situation is unsafe
  • Problem-solving skills: persistent in finding safe and effective solutions
  • Willingness to learn: consistently develop your skills and competencies relevant to your discipline
  • Relevant qualification: ideally hold an NVQ Level 1 or 2 linked to the discipline, or equivalent level of relevant experience

Working Conditions

  • Shifts: Technician roles involve a changing shift pattern, including days, nights, and weekends
  • Outdoor working: comfortable working in different weather conditions
  • Safe working: drug and alcohol testing, medical assessment, and BPSS pre-employment checks required
  • Driving: require a driving licence (category B) to drive Network Rail vehicles
  • Commute times: must be within a 60-minute commute of the location
