Job Title: Head of Public Affairs

About the Role:

The Royal Society is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Head of Public Affairs to join our team. As a key member of our senior leadership team, you will be responsible for developing and implementing our public affairs strategy to influence policy and decision-making in the UK and beyond.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive public affairs strategy to maximize the impact and influence of the Society's work.
  • Work closely with our policy teams to develop influencing plans for projects and advise colleagues on how to maximize the impact and influence of our work.
  • Identify issues on which the Society may wish to engage with UK, national and regional politicians and policymakers and ensure coherence across our teams.
  • Lead a programme of communications and events to raise the profile of our policy work with actors that can help deliver our objectives.
  • Oversee the monitoring of day-to-day parliamentary business and anticipate political and public interest in policy areas where science plays a significant role.
  • Establish and maintain a network of external organizations with shared interests to share information and coordinate action.
  • Manage and provide leadership to the staff and operations of the Public Affairs team.
  • Ensure that our President and Vice-Presidents, Committees, other Fellows and senior colleagues are supportive of our public affairs activity and that it is integrated into our overall work.
  • Support our Chief Science Policy Officer, President and Vice-Presidents, and the Executive Director in their engagement with politicians and influencers.
  • Establish and maintain a senior network of personal contacts with key politicians and influencers, representing the Society as appropriate at meetings and events.
  • Provide regular current relevant political intelligence and analysis.
  • Manage the Public Affairs budget.
  • Monitor the quality and effectiveness of our Public Affairs activity, including contributing to the establishment of measurable goals to be built into planning for Society projects.

About You:

We are looking for a highly skilled and experienced individual with a strong background in public affairs, policy engagement and influencing. You will have a good understanding of science policy and wider policies where science is key, as well as expertise in working with UK Parliamentary processes in the UK and devolved Parliaments. You will be able to convey complex scientific, technical and policy-related ideas effectively and have skilled oral and written communication with a range of audiences. You will also be able to work effectively in a team and have experience of leading and managing staff.
