Job Title: Specialist Biomedical Scientist - Haematology and Blood Transfusion

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Specialist Biomedical Scientist to join our team in the Quality Assurance Laboratory at Velindre University NHS Trust.

About the Role

The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that all processes meet the requirements of the UK guidelines for Blood Transfusion and the EU Directive as inspected by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).

The role will involve working to a high standard to ensure the quality and safety of blood transfusions, and will require the ability to work variable shift patterns, including seven day working, Bank Holidays, and participation in a 24/7 on-call rota.

Main Responsibilities
  • Perform specialist technical and associated procedures unsupervised, with the ability to lead and be accountable for sections of the QA Laboratory in the absence of the Head or Section Leader.
  • Supervise and train other Biomedical Scientists, Trainee Biomedical Scientists, and Medical Laboratory Assistants, with the ability to work flexibly and participate in the 'On-call' rota for the Welsh Blood Service.
  • Work to a high standard to ensure the quality and safety of blood transfusions, and maintain accurate records and reports.
Requirements
  • BSc Hons in Biomedical Sciences (accredited by IBMS) for HCPC registration.
  • Registered with HCPC.
  • IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Transfusion Science (or equivalent qualification where appropriate or evidence of working towards completion).
  • Participating in CPD.
  • Knowledge of Regulatory requirements, including MHRA, CPA, and ISO.
  • Knowledge of UK Guidelines for Transfusion Services (Red Book) and relevant BSQR, BSH & Council of Europe Guidelines.
