Job Title: Band 6 Lead Practitioner

We are seeking a highly skilled Mental Health Practitioner to join our Transformation Unit team. This role will focus on Criminal Justice Liaison and Diversion and requires expertise in assessment and development of robust pathways for individuals across all vulnerabilities.

The ideal candidate will have a professional qualification at degree level in mental health nursing, learning disability nursing, substance misuse, or social work, and hold current registration with the pertinent body. They will also possess experience with the criminal justice system and knowledge of the criminal justice process.

Main Responsibilities:

  1. Screen and offer mental health and all vulnerability assessments to individuals attending a Police Voluntary Interview, identifying robust care pathways and providing advice to the Police.
  2. Attend police custody suites and magistrates' courts, providing mental health assessments, advice, and identifying robust care pathways for individuals where a potential mental health and/or learning disability need has been identified.
  3. Provide the Police and court with written information pertaining to the individual in a timely fashion to inform disposal.
  4. Work closely and build links with all referring agencies within the Police, court, and probation, acting as a single point of contact for health.
  5. Address the court in person when necessary to advise on the disposal and care pathway of a particular case.
  6. Refer to the appropriate team within the community mental health teams.
  7. Make recommendations to the Police, the Crown Prosecution Service, or court, whether the criminal justice system remains involved or diversion is indicated.
  8. Build a good working knowledge of the mental health act in relation to the Police, courts, and the criminal justice system.
  9. Facilitate mental health act assessments at the Police station or court in conjunction with the assessment teams where diversion is indicated.

Person Specification:

  • A professional qualification at degree level or equivalent in mental health nursing, learning disability nursing, substance misuse, or social work.
  • Hold current registration with the pertinent body.
  • Learning and Assessing in the Practice Environment or equivalent teaching qualification.
