About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Legal Officer to join our team in the Ministry of Justice. As a Senior Legal Officer, you will play a critical role in ensuring the Department fulfils its legal and statutory obligations with regards national security related casework.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee management of prisoner-related casework, liaising with the Parole Commissioners for Northern Ireland and the Sentence Review Commissioners.
  • Working with legal advisors, oversee the management of Security and Protection Group litigation, including civil claims and judicial reviews.
  • Act as NIO sponsor for the Sentence Review Commissioners.
  • Develop and maintain productive close working relationships with a range of legal advisors, other government departments, and security partners.
  • Draft clear, precise advice for Minister and Senior Officials on complex legal-related issues.
  • Liaise closely with legal advisors and Counsel to agree approaches for the NIO to take in legal proceedings, and produce and check documents to support the NIO position.
  • Undertake searches of NIO filings to identify relevant material to support the progression of cases.
  • Engage in business change, where new and improved approaches are identified for how casework is delivered.

Essential Criteria:

  • Strong partnering and collaborating skills, and the ability to build strong relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders to support effective delivery of casework.
  • The ability to present and communicate complex information and recommendations to senior decision makers in a clear and impactful manner.
  • Ability to self-organise, prioritise and pay close attention to detail.
  • A strong track record of providing verbal and written briefings for Ministers and/or senior officials.
  • Sound judgement and analytical skills, the ability to make evidence based recommendations and decisions.
  • Willingness to acquire DV clearance, if not already held.
  • A full, current driving licence (to enable travel to various relevant locations in course of role).

Desirable Criteria:

  • Experience working on legal casework related to national security.
  • An understanding of the political and security environment in Northern Ireland.

Developed Vetting (DV) is required for this post. UK (or UK dual) nationality required.
