Robotics Systems Engineer for Precision Cancer Surgery

London, Greater London, United Kingdom Imperial College London Full time

We are seeking a highly skilled Robotics Systems Engineer to join a pioneering project at Imperial College London, funded by Cancer Research UK and the Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). This groundbreaking endeavour, titled Cancer Surgery at Systems Medicine Level, aims to revolutionise cancer treatment by combining real-time molecular mapping with semi-autonomous surgical robots. The successful candidate will play a key role in developing advanced multimaterial fibres integrating surgical laser delivery with robotics.

This innovative project seeks to enhance precision in tumour resection by harnessing cutting-edge spectroscopically guided feedback systems within semi-autonomous surgical robots. You will be responsible for designing, fabricating, and integrating multimaterial surgical laser and robotic fibres to build medical robotic systems capable of seamless integration with spectroscopic techniques.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Designing and developing control systems, simulations, and real-time feedback mechanisms for precise tumour resection and tissue mapping.
  • Collaborating with engineers, cancer biologists, and clinicians to refine the design and methodology for integrating advanced robotic fibre systems with spectroscopic guidance during surgery.
  • Conducting experimental validation of fibre systems and feedback control in pre-clinical and clinical environments.
  • Publishing research findings in top-tier journals and presenting work at international conferences.

The ideal candidate will possess a PhD in Mechatronics Engineering, Robotics, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field, along with strong experience in control system design and advanced fabrication techniques. Expertise in multimaterial fibre technologies, experimental setups, and system integration within biomedical contexts is also essential.

A competitive salary package, including a sector-leading salary (£60,000 - £80,000 per annum), hybrid working options, and access to world-class research facilities, makes this an exciting opportunity for professionals looking to make a meaningful impact in cancer research and surgical robotics.

As a Robotics Systems Engineer at Imperial College London, you will have the opportunity to work on a high-impact project, collaborate with leading experts, and contribute to the development of life-changing technologies that can transform cancer treatment.
