Job Title: Software Development Engineer

NATS is the UK's leading air navigation service provider, handling over 2 million flights each year. Our purpose is to advance aviation and keep the skies safe.

Job Purpose:

We are seeking a skilled Software Development Engineer to join our Oceanic team. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for managing packages linked to the development and maintenance of software components. Your primary focus will be on creating and maintaining software solutions that enable our team to provide ongoing support and enhancements of NATS systems.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Analysis, design, and implementation of changes to software components
  2. Management of work packages involving the development and delivery of software and its components
  3. Third- and fourth-line support for software solutions
  4. Assistance with activities such as capture, risk analysis, prototyping, estimating, and the production of written proposals
  5. Supervision of engineers assigned to the job holder's work package
  6. Production and maintenance of documents covering the full development lifecycle
  7. Design and implementation of changes to systems/sub-systems and the development and maintenance of software components in the form of work packages
  8. Estimation of the requirement of resources associated with the execution of a work package
  9. Highlighting of any risks or dependencies associated with a work package
  10. Provision of technical guidance to junior software engineers
  11. Delivery of the output of a work package for the performance, budget, and schedule of the work package outputs
  12. Response to requests for specialist support, requiring rapid analysis of the situation and immediate action to ensure high utilisation of the NATS software systems
  13. Portrayal of expertise and knowledge in the rapidly changing field of software and systems
  14. Provision of technical advice to customers and staff within a particular technical field
Essential Skills and Experience:
  1. A minimum of a HNC (or equivalent RQF level 4 or SCQF level 7 qualification) in a computing, engineering, or technology-related discipline and relevant experience
  2. Knowledge of software engineering and experience across the full project lifecycle, including design, development, and testing
  3. Understanding or experience of systems development/engineering, working in a commercial environment. Previous experience of ATC systems and software is highly desirable
  4. Experience with DELPHI is a must
  5. An understanding of work package management within a software development environment, including the principles of staff management
  6. Experience of negotiating with users, customers, other disciplines, and suppliers
