Job Summary

An exciting opportunity exists for a six-month fixed-term Head Orthoptist post at University Hospitals Birmingham. The successful candidate will lead the Orthoptic Service at Heartlands, Good Hope, and Solihull, taking full responsibility for the daily management of the service at these sites.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the Orthoptic Service, managing and developing a team responsive to change and challenges within the environment.
  • Provide clinical leadership for all orthoptists, managing and developing a team that delivers high-quality services.
  • Manage the community school vision screening programme within the district schools and Child Development Centres.
  • Support the strabismus botulinum toxin injection service.
  • Act as the authorised signatory for the management of the orthoptic service budget and donated funds account.
  • Maintain an asset register and medical devices inventory.
Requirements
  • Significant experience working as an Orthoptist at Band 7 level.
  • Experience working in a multi-disciplinary and cross-agency work environment.
  • Awareness of current relevant NHS policy context relating to the specialty.
  • Up-to-date evidence of achievements and career development in the current post and ongoing professional development/competence in line with professional body recommendations and HCPC requirements.
  • Flexible and willing to travel to different sites across UHB as needed for the effective delivery of the service.
  • Ability to work a varied shift pattern where required.
