Job Summary

We are seeking a highly specialist Speech and Language Therapist to join our Children's SLT team in Birmingham. The successful candidate will have expertise in the area of bilingualism and will work as an integral part of our management team managing a team of 10 to 20 SLTs.

Main Duties

  • Provide Speech and Language Therapy at a highly specialist level, with a specific focus on the area of bilingualism, functioning in partnership with other agencies and disciplines to support in the holistic assessment, diagnosis and intervention for children and young people known to the service.
  • Demonstrate clinical leadership in bilingualism and represent the local team/service area in all appropriate meetings to support and develop quality services for bilingual children and young people across the city in an integrated partnership model.
  • Manage the day-to-day management and support of a team of SLT staff comprising of bands 4 to 7.
  • Develop strong and effective working relationships with colleagues using highly developed interpersonal skills.
  • Apply BCHC Trust policies regarding staff management with fairness and compassion.

Job Responsibilities

  • Contribute to discussions around setting the direction for the service including foreseeing risks and opportunities.
  • Link in with regional & national colleagues via networks to benchmark best practice, build professional networks and bring practice back to the service to contribute to service planning within the specialist area.
  • Review and interpret research evidence relevant to specialist area and contribute to discussions on how to implement findings to the benefit of the service in line with service priorities.
  • Manage staff performance/disciplinary matters within the designated team, with support from the Service Operational Manager.
  • Support the Professional Leads and Service Clinical Manager in the development and implementation of an appropriate training programme for members of the team across the locality, using information from appraisals and personal development plans.
  • Take a role in the local implementation and monitoring of clinical supervision/practice support systems in line with relevant policies and procedures.
  • Assist the Service Clinical Manager and Professional Leads in the recruitment, selection, and induction of staff, as required.
  • Participate in the development of clinical protocols for use within the Service.

Person Specification

  • First degree level qualification, relevant to service area.
  • HCPC Licence to practice.
  • Full Membership of Professional body, relevant to service area.
  • Evidence of recent relevant CPD activities in specialist area.
  • Relevant training in specialist area post graduate dysphagia qualification, Sensory-Integration, neurological rehabilitation.
  • Relevant training in clinical leadership.
