Bee in the Woods Forest School & Kindergarten is an innovative outdoor childcare setting located on the outskirts of Brighton & Hove, East Sussex. Our beautiful woodland base offers a unique early years experience to 3-7 year olds, valuing nature as our teacher and learning through play amongst the trees or on visits to the local beach.

Role Overview

The Caretaker/Caretaker & Woodland Conservationist will play a pivotal role in maintaining the physical environment of our woodland nursery sites. Responsibilities include ensuring the outdoor spaces are safe, clean, and well-maintained, while enhancing the natural beauty and sustainability of the woodlands.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Regularly inspect woodland play areas and pathways for hazards, guaranteeing a secure environment for children.
  • Maintain fencing, gates, and other infrastructure to ensure the stability of our outdoor setting.
  • Clear fallen branches and manage potential risks such as overgrown vegetation, preserving the health of the woodland ecosystem.
  • Assist with fire pit maintenance and safe storage of tools and equipment, promoting a culture of safety and responsibility.
Conservation and Aesthetic Improvements:
  • Support the ecological health of the woodland by implementing sustainable practices and conservation methods.
  • Collaborate with kindergarten staff to design and set up outdoor learning spaces that foster a love for nature and exploration.
Requirements:
  • Competency in using tools and equipment for woodland and site maintenance, ensuring efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Understanding of health and safety regulations, particularly for outdoor and child-friendly environments, prioritizing the well-being of children and staff.
  • Passion for woodland conservation and sustainable practices, driving positive change in our community.
  • Strong physical fitness and comfort working outdoors in all weather conditions, embracing the challenges and rewards of this role.
  • Knowledge of local flora and fauna or relevant conservation qualifications, staying up-to-date with best practices and industry developments.
  • First Aid certification (preferably paediatric or outdoor), providing essential skills for emergency situations.
  • Chainsaw certification or similar, if required for specific tasks, demonstrating expertise and commitment to the role.
Package

£11–£15 per hour, based on experience, skills, and certifications. Consideration may be given to those with woodland management qualifications or significant site maintenance experience, reflecting their value to our team.
