Swindon, Swindon, United Kingdom The National Trust Full time
Project Director Opportunity

The National Trust is seeking an experienced Project Director to lead the delivery of low carbon heating projects in the South West region as part of our net zero strategy.

We are looking for a skilled project manager with experience in building services, particularly mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP), end to end delivery of construction works in listed buildings and practical use of the Project Management Framework.

This is a permanent role in a centrally funded programme with a £45 million budget, ninety seven projects to deliver and 2080 tonnes of carbon to save by 2030, so you will need to be ready to jump in with both feet.

What it's like to work here

You will join a highly skilled team of project professionals working at the cutting edge of decarbonising our Nation's heritage. The Renewable Energy Programme is recognised as a pioneering leader in the sector having successfully delivered 135 renewable energy projects within historic settings over the past decade.
We take pride in our professional, agile, and collaborative culture, where getting the job done with excellence and good humour is key. You will be equipped with the necessary tools to deliver major projects, supported in your development to become the best project manager you can be, and have the opportunity to learn from top-tier consultants and contractors in the industry. Additionally, you will gain expertise in integrating renewable technologies into some of the most protected buildings and landscapes under our care.
You will be based at one of our South West hubs, working in a hybrid model with 2 to 3 days on-site and the flexibility to work from home or a location of your choice for the remainder of the time. While travel and occasional overnight stays are a part of the role, we encourage you to manage your own schedule to maintain a healthy work-life balance.

Key Responsibilities

You will be allocated 26 projects throughout the South West region, from Penrose House to Dunster Castle and Lacock Abbey, leading all stages of the project lifecycle for the delivery of heat pump systems (ground source, water source and air source) and biomass heating systems.

You'll ensure both internal and external stakeholders are motivated and engaged, well informed and provision is in place to deliver high quality projects safely, on time and to budget. Your responsibility will run until the project is handed over to the property team and the system is operating as part of business as usual.

Site work involves managing specialist surveys, briefing property teams, managing contractors and using your soft skills to build relationships. Desk based work involves preparing and presenting governance papers, drafting tender documentation, reviewing design information, programming works, NEC contract management, CDM compliance and financial management.

If you are comfortable with frequent travel and looking for a new challenge in your project management career, this could be the perfect opportunity for you.

What we're looking for

You can view the full role profile for this role in the document attached. You don't need to have all of the knowledge, skills and experience listed in the role profile; this is just to provide a full picture of what's possible in this role.
We'd love to hear from you if you're:
  • able to demonstrate experience of successfully delivering complex end to end project/programme management, including defining resources, leading procurement securing project teams and matrix management across multiple projects/programme
  • a Professional with technical knowledge and skills in project management demonstrated by a recognised project (AMP PMQ/Prince) or programme management (MSP) qualification
  • able to evidence ongoing CPD in your career to date
