The University of Cambridge is seeking an experienced safety professional to join our team as a Biological Safety Advisor. This role will support the Head of Biological Safety in developing guidance, delivering training, and providing expert advice on biological safety matters.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide expert advice on biological safety matters, including the safe use of pathogens, toxins, and genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
  • Develop, review, and update biological safety policies, procedures, and guidelines to ensure compliance with relevant legislation and best practices.
  • Review risk assessments for higher risk activities involving biological materials and advise on appropriate control measures and contingency plans.
  • Design, review, or deliver training programs on biological safety for staff and students, promoting a proactive safety culture.
  • Lead or join audits and inspections of laboratories and facilities to ensure regulatory compliance and identify areas for improvement.
  • Provide technical support and advice during biological safety incidents, including investigation of root causes and prevention of recurrence.
  • Collaborate with academic departments, research groups, and other stakeholders to support safe research practices and compliance with safety regulations.
Requirements
  • A degree in biological sciences, microbiology, biotechnology, or a related field. A postgraduate qualification in biosafety or a related discipline is desirable.
  • Professional certifications such as NEBOSH certificate or equivalent qualification are preferred. Biosafety Practitioner Level 1 certification is an advantage.
  • Proven experience in a biological safety role, preferably within a research or academic environment. Practical experience of working in high containment level facilities is desirable.
  • Strong knowledge of biological safety regulations and best practices, excellent communication and training skills, and the ability to conduct thorough risk assessments.
