Job Overview

We are seeking a seasoned Senior Underwriter to join our growing Financial Institutions (FI) team at HFG. This is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated individual with a strong background in D&O and FI underwriting.

The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of the SME - Mid Market region and possess excellent business development skills. They will be responsible for driving new business, maintaining strong broker relationships, and owning the development and profitability of their book of business.

About the Role

This Senior Underwriting position involves:

  • Underwriting & Risk Assessment: Ensuring consistency with risk quality, aligned with company strategy, and within individual authority.
  • Business Development: Driving new business and maintaining strong broker relationships by writing new and renewal business in line with agreed targets for Gross Written Premium (GWP).
  • Portfolio Ownership: Taking accountability for underwriting decisions and owning the development and profitability of your book of business.
  • Relationship Management: Developing and maintaining close, effective relationships with brokers, insurers, and clients, including travel and client entertainment where necessary.
  • Client Meetings: Encouraging reciprocal visits from brokers and customers, actively participating in meetings and taking a lead role where appropriate.
  • Compliance: Ensuring all underwriting activity complies with relevant legislation, underwriting agreements, and industry best practices.
  • Market Awareness: Staying informed about market conditions, especially in the SME and mid-market segments for D&O and FI lines.
  • Strategic Contribution: Working with the leadership team to support the development and execution of the strategic business plan for the D&O and FI portfolio. Actively seeking out new markets and opportunities for growth, providing recommendations for expansion where appropriate.
  • Team Leadership & Development: Providing guidance, mentorship, and technical support to junior underwriters, assisting in their professional development. Act as a referral point for complex cases, offering support and advice to the underwriting team. Assist in the development of underwriting processes and best practices to improve team efficiency and consistency.
  • Compliance & Risk Management: Ensuring all underwriting activities are conducted in compliance with FCA regulations and other relevant legislation. Maintaining accurate and up-to-date underwriting documentation and ensuring adherence to internal risk management practices.
Requirements

To succeed in this role, you will need:

  • A strong background in D&O and FI underwriting with experience in the SME - Mid Market region.
  • Excellent business development skills and ability to drive new business.
  • Strong relationship management skills and ability to maintain close, effective relationships with brokers, insurers, and clients.
  • Ability to take accountability for underwriting decisions and own the development and profitability of your book of business.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, underwriting agreements, and industry best practices.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with ability to stay informed about market conditions.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with the leadership team to develop and execute the strategic business plan.
What We Offer

We offer a competitive salary of £80,000 - £110,000 per annum, depending on experience, plus benefits including:
