London, Greater London, United Kingdom Barts Health NHS Trust Full time

Job Overview

This is a 12-month non-training position in the Department of Paediatric Surgery, subject to a 3-month probationary period. The post holder will have responsibilities similar to those of a registrar training post, covering General Surgery.

The middle-grade team comprises 4 NTNs and 3-4 clinical fellows. The Fellow posts are fully funded by the Trust and do not have formal educational approval. However, every effort will be made to ensure that the holder of these posts has opportunities to participate in clinical activities, formal teaching sessions, audit, and research.

This post is suitable for secondment.

Main Duties of the Job

This post allows the candidate to join a very busy centre offering exposure to neonatal surgery, GI surgery, and urology, and Paediatric trauma. There are excellent opportunities to be involved in academic work in several research projects being run in the department.

The Paediatric Surgery department comprises 5 surgeons, two of whom practice Paediatric Urology and three who provide the GI service. All will take part in the on-call rota for neonates and other emergencies.

At present, Mr Phelps, Mr Cleeve, and Mr Charlesworth are the Paediatric GI surgeons. They look after patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease jointly with the Paediatric gastroenterologists. They also provide a service for children with Gastro-oesophageal Reflux or feeding problems requiring fundoplications and/or gastrostomies/jejunostomies.

The department of Adult Gastroenterology has an international reputation in the investigation of Motility Disorders and close collaboration exists with them. There are plans for the Paediatric Surgical Service to become more involved in the investigation and management of children with Motility Disorders. Mr Misra and Mrs Ashwini Joshi provide a Paediatric Urology service for the region.
