The Faculty of Science at Kingston University is seeking a highly skilled Senior Technician to provide dedicated technical support to the Department of Geography, Geology, and the Environment. This role offers an exciting opportunity to play a pivotal part in supporting cutting-edge teaching and research in a dynamic and growing department.

As the GGE Technician, you will be responsible for maintaining and supporting a wide range of laboratory and field equipment, ensuring the smooth delivery of practical classes, and assisting with research projects. Your expertise will be crucial in supporting students, academics, and researchers across the department, helping to maintain the highest standards in education and innovation.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Maintain, calibrate, and operate various specialist equipment, including geological survey instruments and geophysical apparatus.
  • Provide technical support for laboratory-based teaching, fieldwork, and research activities.
  • Assist with the preparation and setup of practical classes, ensuring all equipment and materials are ready for use.
  • Provide technical guidance and training to staff and students on the use of laboratory and field equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, conducting risk assessments as required.
  • Manage equipment inventories and oversee the procurement of consumables and replacement parts.
  • Collaborate with academic staff to develop innovative practical exercises and support research projects.
  • Forklift driving experience preferred.

The Ideal Candidate

We are looking for a motivated individual with a strong background in geology, geophysics, or a related discipline, coupled with experience in technical support for laboratory and/or field-based activities. You will have excellent problem-solving skills, the ability to work effectively as part of a team, and a proactive approach to tasks.

Essential Criteria:
  • A degree or equivalent qualification in geology, geophysics, or a related field, or significant relevant experience.
  • Hands-on experience with geological and geophysical equipment, including maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • A strong understanding of health and safety regulations in a laboratory and fieldwork context.
  • Excellent organisational skills and the ability to prioritise tasks effectively.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to train and support students and staff.

Salary: £35,000 - £45,000 per annum (dependent on experience)
