We are seeking a highly motivated and ambitious individual to join our well-integrated team as a Consultant Paediatric Haematologist. This new post is part of the service development to centralise and develop paediatric haematology, consolidating expertise in the department and focusing primarily on non-malignant haematology.

The successful candidate will be responsible for patients with non-malignant haematological disorders, including rare inherited anaemias. They will also contribute to the paediatric haematology laboratory service and be expected to take a normal role in management, administration, and audit within paediatric haematology/oncology and clinical and laboratory haematology.

The appointee will be expected to contribute to undergraduate teaching and to the higher specialist training of specialist registrars in haematology as an educational supervisor. They will also be involved in current research within paediatric haematology and be expected to help drive forward this exciting phase within paediatric haematology in Newcastle.

The candidate must be able to evidence relevant expertise and training, and be registered medical practitioners and on, or eligible to join, the Specialist Register within six months of the date of the Appointments Committee.

This is a new post to expand and develop the regional paediatric haematology service after centralisation of services into one department based in the Great North Children's Hospital. This follows expansion of patient numbers and will allow consolidation of consultant areas of interest feeding into the stem cell transplant and cellular therapies service.

Depending on the interests and expertise of the candidate, this may include clinical management of patients with non-malignant conditions including haemoglobinopathies and malignant haematological disorders.

Clinical responsibilities will include the main focus of the post to support and develop the non-malignant service, however there will be a requirement for involvement in all aspects of haematology including laboratory, consultative and malignant haematology.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Responsibility for patients with non-malignant haematological disorders including rare inherited anaemias.
  • Clinical care of patients treated at the Primary Treatment Centre at GNCH.
  • Laboratory and consultative haematology duties.
  • Bone marrow transplant: pre- and post-transplant care of patients with haematological disorders treated within GNCH.
  • On-call Duties: ward attending system during working hours and an out of hours on-call rota.
  • Administrative duties: management, administration, and audit within paediatric haematology/oncology and clinical and laboratory haematology.
  • Research: involvement in current research within paediatric haematology.
  • Teaching: contribution to undergraduate teaching and higher specialist training of specialist registrars in haematology.
