Founder in Residence for Climate Impact

Plastic packaging accounts for 40% of the 400 million tons of plastic produced annually, with the market expected to grow from USD 381.57 billion in 2022 to USD 584.09 billion by 2032. Despite this growth, the short lifespan of these materials—95% of which are single-use—results in enormous amounts of plastic waste (350 million tons annually), with only 9% being recycled. Significant challenges include material complexity, contamination, limited replacement materials, inadequate collection systems, and low recycling yields. Our goal is to develop sustainable alternatives to traditional plastic packaging and improve recycling processes to reduce global plastic waste.
We're taking a first principles approach to address the plastic packaging challenge. Our process involves working backwards from the desired high-level outcomes:
- Transforming the plastic packaging market and significantly reducing environmental impact;
- Creating competitive alternatives to traditional plastic packaging, such as CO2-derived, biomass-derived, or non-hydrocarbon alternatives;
- Developing advanced recycling technologies and enhancing enabling infrastructure.
To succeed in this role, you'll need to bring a strong background in chemistry, materials science, biotechnology, or chemical engineering, with a focus on organic (bio)polymer design and/or organic (bio)chemicals. You'll also need to have in-depth knowledge of state-of-the-art technologies and constraints in areas such as CO2 conversion, biomass conversion, or plastic recycling technologies. Additionally, you should have industry-specific know-how, commercial knowledge, and a network within environmental sustainability, chemical manufacturing, or related industries. Experience in building and scaling new technologies from concept to demonstration, raising funds from early-stage investors/VC, and building and scaling a high-growth enterprise (leadership/c-suite roles) is also highly desirable.
By joining Deep Science Ventures, you'll be part of a team of operators who have founded companies and led the translation of science at some of the most respected universities, charities, funds, and government agencies. You'll have access to optimized, purpose-built, proprietary tools, resources, and processes to help create high-impact ventures from scratch. You'll also have the opportunity to work with our network of Partners and Advisors, who bring know-how specific to the opportunity area. We offer up to £250k in investment to incorporate the new venture and develop early proof-of-concept data, a guaranteed income of £4,166 per month paid as a consultancy fee until the company is launched and the pre-seed investment is secured, and a majority equity stake in the new company for you and your co-founders. Finally, you'll have continuous post-spinout support, including fundraising, commercial partnerships, recruitment, and team-building.
