Senior Trader - Carbon and Power

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior Trader to join our Commodities trading desk in London. As a Senior Trader, you will be responsible for further expanding our business in the Carbon Compliance markets and developing our franchise in the Carbon voluntary market.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Structuring, pricing, trading, and managing positions on Carbon and Power contracts (Physical and financial) to exploit and develop the bank's core client franchise in a risk-controlled, capital-efficient, and cost-effective manner.
  • Effectively market-making, managing risk, and keeping senior staff informed of current risk positions, as well as staying up-to-date with the rules and regulations of the Carbon and Power markets and exchanges.
  • Working with the Head of Commodity trading to implement the most optimal trading strategies on carbon and power assets.
  • Interacting with OTC/listed brokers to ensure the best execution is always performed.
  • Building and maintaining strong relationships with Trading counterparties.
  • Monitoring current market levels and competitor pricing, marking the trading books, and making available such market data across the Commodity platform, reconciling, and ensuring accuracy of Risk and Profit & Loss figures on a daily basis.
  • Keeping trading books within all required risk limits.
  • Developing technical, market, product, and technological expertise in a fashion consistent with the strategic aims of the business.
  • Acting as a subject matter expert on Carbon and Power within the bank and promoting the franchise with all internal stakeholders.
  • Coordinating with Support units, specifically IT, to set up new instruments/tools in the various trading systems.
  • Working with the operations team to enable them to handle the settlement and delivery of financial and physical carbon and power contracts.
  • Actively promoting the Carbon and Power franchise with Sales teams, providing accurate and timely prices on their requests, and providing regular trade ideas and market comments.
  • Assisting in the further automation and digitization of the Carbon and Power business, coordinating projects, and monitoring performance against objectives.

Key Requirements:

  • At least 3 years of experience in Carbon and Power trading is essential.
  • A strong understanding of the Emissions trading schemes in the EU and UK (EU ETS and UK ETS) is required, with experience in the primary markets auctions being a plus.
  • A solid comprehension of the Carbon Voluntary market and the ability to conduct light due diligence on various carbon projects to assess their suitability and liaise with the Sustainability team to select projects.
  • Sharp technical expertise in Energy derivatives contracts is necessary.
  • A solid understanding of the various Energy supply and demand fundamentals in Europe is required.
  • A robust understanding of the key end-consumers and suppliers in Europe and the UK is necessary.
  • The ability to carry out the execution of multiple Energy contracts in a tight frame in the most efficient, compliant, and cost-effective way is essential.
  • Excellent numerical and analytical skills are required.
  • Solid problem-solving abilities are necessary.
  • A strong commercial mindset and high communication skills are required.
  • A high entrepreneurial attitude is necessary to develop a business.
  • An excellent P&L track record is required.
  • A degree in Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, Econometrics, or a similar highly quantitative discipline is preferred.
