Job Purpose
The University of Glasgow is seeking a highly skilled Senior Network Analyst to join its IT team. As a key member of the infrastructure function within the Service Operations division, the post holder will be responsible for resolving any network-related issues across the Schools, capturing the existing network topology, and planning the migration of the College network infrastructure onto a new network via the University's Network Improvement Project.
The Senior Network Analyst will work closely with the Central IT Network team to ensure that any issues are dealt with in the most expedient manner possible. Reporting to the Infrastructure Lead, the post holder will act with limited supervision to deliver the following main activities and responsibilities:
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide the lead technical expertise in the operational delivery of IT services in their chosen field, ensuring a continuous and high-quality level of support while taking account of technological developments, School needs, and institutional policy.
- Plan and support the University IT or CoSE IT implementation of upgrades/new service provision to maintain up-to-date and secure services.
- Ensure that service provision meets the learning, teaching, and research needs of academic staff and students, the needs of professional services staff, and takes account of the requirements for economy, efficiency, and effectiveness in the utilization of available resources.
- Develop appropriate service documentation both for staff working on the service and for end users, proactively making and contributing to continuous improvements.
- Support and maintain any tools required for the support and operation of services.
- Provide support and training of individuals or groups of staff across the schools relating to network support.
- Provide feedback to other service managers on issues identified with their services and processes, escalating any major issues and key development requirements when identified.
- Update and develop incident and request processes for network-related issues.
- Provide regular reports and recommendations to other CoSE IT Service Managers and the CoSE IT Leadership team, including security incidents, major incidents, and feedback from service users.
- Be responsible for ensuring that the network remains accessible in the schools that maintain their own service, complying with any relevant legislation, and ensuring that any recommendations from audits or compliance bodies are addressed.
- To be a champion for creative and new thinking and innovative working practices, sharing best practice, and to keep abreast of industry and sector knowledge and insights.
- To provide timely, high-quality support and communications to users of the network service across all CoSE schools.
- To attend and report to internal and external meetings as directed, representing the CoSE IT department, the College, and the University.
- To perform such other duties, appropriate to the grade, as may be directed by the College Management Group or Head of IT (CoSE) or nominated representative.
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills, and Experience
The post holder should have obtained or be in the process of obtaining an industry-wide profession qualification in their field of expertise, which substantiates their status as a specialist. A good understanding of current and emerging technologies and how other enterprises are employing them to drive digital business support is also essential.
The post holder should have significant experience as the lead technical professional supporting an IT services/project in multi-functional, complex organizations. Experience of working collaboratively with senior technical and non-technical colleagues, with the ability to influence and negotiate at all levels, including colleagues who are not part of the direct team, is also required.
The post holder should have a deep understanding of networking concepts and technologies, including knowledge of routers, switches, firewalls, and other networking hardware. A deep understanding of core networking protocols, including TCP/IP and DNS, to a level where they can mentor/coach junior staff, is also essential.
The post holder should have experience of analyzing network data to identify trends and patterns. Practical experience of improving the controls and management of the schools' networks pre-transition to ensure that we improve the security in relation to research data is also required.
Terms and Conditions
The salary for this post will be Grade 7, £39,347 - £44,263 per annum. This post is full-time (35 hours per week) and fixed-term for up to 2 years in the first instance.
