Senior Collection Development Manager

About the Role
As a Senior Collection Development Manager at nationalmuseums.org, you will be responsible for developing and implementing strategies to strengthen our collection of modern and contemporary British art.
Main Responsibilities
- Contribute to the planning and development of exhibitions, commissions, and displays that showcase the diversity and richness of British art.
- Develop and lead projects that promote the acquisition, preservation, and interpretation of modern and contemporary British art.
- Liaise with artists, galleries, collectors, and other stakeholders to facilitate the realization of their projects at Tate Britain.
- Mentor and supervise Assistant Curators in delivering displays, such as Art Now, contemporary collection installations, and collection interventions.
- Write informative and scholarly texts for exhibition catalogues and conceive and edit books in collaboration with colleagues in Tate Publishing.
- Work with colleagues to develop interpretation strategies, writing and compiling accessible texts for exhibitions and displays, and delivering supporting talks, tours, and events.
- Stay up-to-date with exhibition practice and innovation nationally and internationally.
Project Management
- Lead project management across the development, production, and delivery of complex, multi-disciplinary exhibitions working to the highest production standards from conception to close and deinstallation.
- Communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders to engage their support and contribution to the project.
- Advise on the practical and financial feasibility of projects and work to find creative solutions to assist with content decisions.
- Identify staffing needs and source temporary expertise, ensuring appropriate contracts are in place.
- Devise project timelines, identifying key deadlines and coordinating workflow and communication across teams.
- Maintain key project documents to support effective tracking and evaluation of projects.
Acquisitions and Research
- Apply specialist expertise on contemporary British art to collections activity at Tate, including awareness of the art market and current valuations.
- Propose, research, and write about acquisitions in the clear language of the Tate house style, considering acquisitions strategy and procedures.
- Maintain and develop a network of contacts among artists, estates, galleries, collectors, critics, auction houses, and benefactors to support acquisitions relationships and fundraising.
- Supervise Assistant Curators' research on contemporary British Art and acquisition causes.
Skills and Qualifications
- A postgraduate degree in a relevant field (e.g., curating, art history, museum studies).
- At least 3 years of experience in a similar role, preferably in a national museum or gallery setting.
- Demonstrated expertise in modern and contemporary British art, including knowledge of the art market and current valuations.
- Excellent communication, project management, and leadership skills.
Salary and Benefits
