Housing Officer

East Devon

4 days site based (Honiton) 1 day Hybrid

5 month fixed term contract

Salary up to £38,850.37 pro Rata Depending on experience plus excellent benefits

Our client, a forward-thinking District Council, is seeking a Housing Officer to work in East Devon on a 5-month fixed-term contract. The successful candidate will provide a customer-focused housing options and advice service, preventing and relieving homelessness wherever possible, in line with Homelessness Reduction Act 2017 legislation.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Deliver a comprehensive and innovative housing options and advice service, emphasizing early intervention and homelessness prevention, promoting a range of housing options to meet customer needs.
  2. Participate in the housing options duty service, providing initial advice face-to-face or over the telephone to customers, handling incoming calls, emails, and letters.
  3. Conduct housing needs assessments for applicants who are homeless or threatened with homelessness, in accordance with the Homelessness Reduction Act 2017.
  4. Negotiate and mediate with landlords and other relevant parties to prevent homelessness by keeping customers in their properties or securing suitable alternative accommodation.
  5. Investigate applications in line with the Housing Act 1996 Part 7 and relevant case law.
  6. Develop, review, and update effective Personalized Housing Plans in line with the Homelessness Reduction Act 2017, ensuring successful homelessness prevention or relief.
  7. Identify suitable emergency and temporary accommodation for homeless priority need households to effectively relieve homelessness when necessary.
  8. Promote and utilize the Council's Rent Deposit Scheme to secure private rented accommodation and prevent or relieve homelessness wherever possible.
  9. Participate in a reactive 'out of hours' service to deal with urgent homeless cases, including evenings, weekends, and the Christmas and New Year break.
