Job Title: Children and Young People Officer

This is an exciting opportunity to work in the heart of North Yorkshire Council, leading the team that administers school admission, transport, and exclusion appeals.

About the Role

The Appeals Team, part of Legal and Democratic Services, plays a crucial role in ensuring the proper and lawful administration of around 500 school admission, transport, and exclusion appeals hearings each year.

As the Principal Appeals Officer, you will lead and line manage an established team of four Senior Appeals Officers, providing effective support and guidance to independent appeal panel members, councillors, officers, schools, parents, and members of the public regarding the appeals process.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and manage the Appeals Team to ensure the provision of high-quality support and guidance to stakeholders.
  • Develop and implement efficient processes to improve the appeals process.
  • Collaborate with the team to ensure the proper and lawful administration of appeals hearings.
  • Provide guidance and support to independent appeal panel members, councillors, officers, schools, parents, and members of the public.
Requirements

The post is politically restricted under the Local Government and Housing Act 1989.

This is a permanent, full-time position (37 hours) based at County Hall, Northallerton, with hybrid working opportunities and a requirement to attend meetings in other parts of the county.

The successful candidate will have excellent leadership and project management skills, with the ability to develop and implement efficient processes to improve the appeals process.

They will also have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to provide guidance and support to stakeholders.
