Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly motivated and innovative Mechanical Engineering Technician to join our team at the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE). As a key member of our Mechanisms team, you will be responsible for the design, manufacture, assembly, and testing of robust miniature weapon safety and environmental sensing mechanisms.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform inspection, assembly, testing, and approval of mechanisms component builds within our in-house laboratory facilities.
  • Write technical documents or reports to support the work listed above.
  • Use various types of laboratory equipment and plant to support the team's deliverables.
  • Train and mentor others in the use of laboratory equipment.
  • Run and maintain the team's Additive Manufacturing equipment.
  • Provide technical input and contributions during design team meetings.
  • Ensure laboratory equipment is readily available for use, equipment utilisation, and deconfliction.
  • Organise and/or support plant and equipment maintenance schedules.

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to work independently but also within a team, supporting colleagues to achieve the team's goals.
  • Awareness of safety-critical environments such as laboratories or production facilities.
  • Understanding of the use of measurement devices such as micrometers and depth gauges.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office programs such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Desirable Skills and Experience:

  • ONC, HNC, or HND within an engineering field.
  • Previous experience of working within a laboratory environment.
  • Engineering manufacturing techniques including Additive Manufacturing.
  • Assembly and/or inspection of very small mechanical components.
  • Writing of technical documents or reports.
