Job Summary

The Chief Health and Safety Officer will lead the Health and Safety team at the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust, ensuring compliance and a safe working environment for colleagues. This role works closely with the Clinical Directorate, Deputy Director, and Director to drive forward the Health and Safety agenda.

The post holder will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the Health and Safety department, including the formation and implementation of Trust Health and Safety strategy, policy, and management systems. They will provide competent and technical advice, guidance, and support to the Trust in meeting its statutory duties under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and associated regulatory requirements.

The role includes assessing non-clinical hazards and risks, suggesting remedial solutions, and escalating significant risks through the Trust's governance structure. The post holder will also monitor, audit, and review risks, providing overall assurance up to Board level.

The Chief Health and Safety Officer will assist in developing a culture of safe working practices, conduct periodic audits of health and safety management systems, and analyze health and safety records and reports to advise on system improvements.

The post holder will work closely with diverse clinical and non-clinical groups, including senior managers, Trade Union representatives, and all levels of staff within the organization.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Lead the Health and Safety team to ensure compliance and a safe working environment
  2. Develop and implement Trust Health and Safety strategy, policy, and management systems
  3. Provide competent and technical advice, guidance, and support to the Trust
