Ordnance Specialist

The Role of a Gun Fitter is to maintain weapons systems and support large calibre trials at the MoD Shoeburyness site. This position involves involvement in all aspects of MoD trial support for large calibre weapons and mounting systems, mechanical equipment, and explosive materials used in human performance and protection capability through QinetiQ's bespoke test and evaluation services.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair large calibre weapon systems ensuring safe and serviceable conditions in preparation for trials.
- Ensure weaponry and associated equipment are issued for trial and proof activities.
- Provide preventative, scheduled maintenance, and fault rectification services.
- Support stakeholder engagement for the Team Leader of Ordinance, Munitions, and Explosives (OME) Engineering.
- Conduct risk assessments across relevant equipment, rigs, and explosive articles.
- Develop professional and technical skills in pre-planned and reactive maintenance for trials support.
- Support materials used in human protection through test and evaluation trials.
Requirements
- Proven experience working with large calibre ordnance and associated equipment.
- Awareness of risk assessment and health & safety regulations associated with large calibre weapon systems.
- Previous experience working with large calibre gun systems.
- Demonstrable experience in maintenance, fault finding, and repair of large calibre weapon systems and engineering workshop techniques.
Qualifications
- A recognised military large calibre armament apprenticeship, armourer qualification, or equivalent experience as a large calibre engineer or armourer.
- Computer literacy including Microsoft Office applications.
- A full clean UK driving licence.
Estimated Salary Range: £35,000 - £45,000 per annum
