Research Associate in Compressed Air Energy Storage System

The University of Manchester is seeking a highly motivated Research Associate to contribute to a multidisciplinary research project focused on developing a near-isothermal co-generation compressed air energy storage (CAES) system. This project, funded by EPSRC, aims to tackle a fundamental and industrially relevant problem in the field of energy storage.

As a Research Associate, you will be part of a dynamic research team comprising academics, postdoctoral researchers, and PhD students from the University of Manchester, Imperial College London, and the University of Birmingham. You will work closely with 18 industrial partners, including EDF-Energy, Arup, and Siemens-Energy, to design and build the near-isothermal co-generation CAES system using liquid piston compressor/expander technology.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Conducting thermodynamic and experimental studies to design and build the near-isothermal co-generation CAES system
  • Collaborating with the research team to develop and implement new technologies and methodologies
  • Engaging with industrial partners to ensure the project meets their needs and expectations
