Job Summary

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a skilled Dentist to join our team in a correctional facility setting. As a Dentist with the Virginia Department of Corrections, you will be responsible for providing routine and emergency dental care to adult inmates, as well as supervising dental assistants and hygienists.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide routine and emergency dental care to adult inmates, including examining teeth and gums, taking x-rays, and performing fillings and extractions as needed
  • Supervise dental assistants and hygienists, providing clinical guidance and support
  • Diagnose and develop treatment plans for patients, including prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases, injuries, and deformities of the oral cavity
  • Participate in the Mobile Dental Team, providing dental care and oral healthcare to patients at various facilities and field units
  • Collaborate with other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive care for patients

Requirements

  • Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (D.M.D.) degree from a school approved by the Council on Dental Education, American Dental Association
  • Current licensure to practice dentistry in Virginia
  • Controlled Substances Certificate from the Drug Enforcement Administration
  • Ability to diagnose and treat oral health issues, as well as inform patients on preventative care and treatment
  • Ability to travel to surrounding institutions and field units as part of the Mobile Dental Team
  • Experience with restoration and replacement of teeth damaged from decay, trauma, or disease
  • Working knowledge of general dentistry
  • Ability to communicate orally and in written form in a professional manner

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous supervisory experience or work experience training and supervising dental staff
  • Experience providing dental care and treatment in a correctional setting
