Charles River Laboratories is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Scientific Team Lead to join our Structural Biology, Biophysics, and Protein Science management team.

This role will provide strong scientific, operational, and strategic leadership to multiple teams at our Harlow and Chesterford Research Park sites. The successful candidate will be responsible for:

Scientific Leadership:

  • Providing expert-level support and troubleshooting to team members in one or more disciplines of Structural Biology, Protein Science, and Biophysics.
  • Leading project feasibility scoping, proposal development, and project management review.
  • Collaborating with cross-discipline project teams to deliver high-quality scientific projects.

People Leadership:

  • Line management of up to 8 direct reports, including performance reviews, succession planning, development, and training.
  • Mentoring and coaching team members to achieve their potential and advance their careers.
  • Ensuring compliance with company policies and guidelines, including safety and regulatory requirements.
  • Guiding team members in technical aspects of their core discipline and presenting complex data to clients.

Business Development:

  • Working closely with Business Development teams to establish client needs and provide guidance on skills available across CRL.
  • Securing new business opportunities and collaborating with global sites to drive efficiencies and best practices.

Requirements:

  • A minimum BSc in a related discipline, with a PhD (or equivalent experience) in a field of relevance to Structural Biology and Protein Sciences.
  • Crystallisation expertise in an industrial or core facility group within a structural biology drug discovery environment is highly desirable.
  • Proven track record of impacting upon projects and delivering results in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Dynamic and flexible approach towards achieving client-based objectives and meeting challenging deadlines.
