Job Description

A reputable school in Greenwich seeks a highly skilled Science Technician to lead their team from September. The successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating the use of practical resources and providing assistance and advice in the practical needs of the science curriculum.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Coordinate the use of practical resources and provide assistance and advice in the practical needs of the science curriculum.
  • Ensure and promote the maintenance of a healthy and safe working environment through active contribution to the assessment, monitoring, and review of health and safety procedures and information resources.
  • Provide technical advice and support on health and safety issues to teaching and technical staff.
  • Deploy four technicians and ensure that essential performance standards are achieved.
  • Undertake performance management reviews for the technicians and plan appropriate training.
  • Coordinate regular technician meetings and record minutes.
  • Contribute to the design, development, and maintenance of specialist resources and offer professional guidance to support students and teachers on the practical aspects of the curriculum.
  • Work closely with the Curriculum Leader in Science regarding changes to the National Curriculum.
  • Be responsible for checking stock, ordering, and keeping stock records and maintaining relevant resources.
  • Ensure that routine and non-routine checking, cleaning, and maintenance, calibration testing, and repairing of equipment are carried out to the required standard.
  • Assist teaching A-level physics experiments as required.
  • Support training of other technicians in physics skills, such as data-logging experiments.
  • Supervise A-level PAG experiments in physics when required after school.
  • Assist with science department trips, such as evening astronomy visits.
  • Review, update, and maintain H+S in physics, including new CLEAPPS directives.
  • Review KS3 and KS4 physics SOW to incorporate a wider range of practical work and support less experienced non-specialist teachers delivering them.
  • Maintain databases for A-level students competing in PAG experiments.
  • Deliver 'exciting' physics demos for teachers when required and be involved in class practicals.
Requirements:
  • A good standard of education.
  • A commitment to your own continued professional development and learning.
  • A commitment to participation.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience of working in a school or similar environment.
  • Experience of using a range of ICT and new technologies.
  • The ability to lead a team of four technicians.
  • Ability to work under pressure and deal with conflicting demands.
  • Awareness of health and safety regulations in relation to science laboratories and chemical storage and protective clothing.
  • Awareness of National Curriculum relating to science.
  • Effective behavior management skills.
  • A commitment to safeguarding for all young people.
  • Proven track record as a science technician.
  • Have a first aid qualification and understand the treatments for chemical injuries that may occur in science experiments.
