Role Responsibility

Kent County Council is seeking individuals to join its Member Remuneration Panel, responsible for advising the Council on the Members Allowances Scheme.

Main Focus
  • Providing a report with recommendations to the Council on the amount of basic allowance payable to all 81 Members (Councillors).
  • Defining roles and responsibilities for which a special responsibility allowance should be payable and the amount for each such allowance.
  • Reviewing miscellaneous expenses such as travel allowances, subsistence allowances, and dependent carers allowances.
  • Allowances to co-opted members.

Applicants should possess some understanding of the roles and responsibilities of Members and knowledge or experience of finance or local government. Political impartiality is essential, and applicants should not be affiliated with the Council or have close associations with Councillors or employees.

This is a part-time position with a four-year term, for which an allowance will be paid. The pattern of work/workload will vary depending on whether the Panel is reviewing the scheme as a whole or part thereof.

Panel members are appointed to a 4-year term, and appointments to consecutive terms are permitted.
