Job Description:

We are seeking a highly skilled Grounds Maintenance Operative to join our team at the College of William & Mary. As a member of the campus operations team, you will be responsible for maintaining the grounds, including general maintenance on plant and shrubbery beds, walkways, exterior stairs, ramps, roads, and parking lots.

The successful candidate will operate heavy equipment, dig ditches, and trenches, while also removing litter from the campus. Additionally, they will set up rooms by moving, arranging, and storing furniture for special functions, and collaborate with other team members to remove snow and ice from the campus during winter months.

This is a non-exempt position that requires overtime work during high peak times, and the ability to lift up to 50 pounds. The ideal candidate will have basic knowledge of landscape maintenance practices, skills in using power and hand tools, and effective communication skills.

Key Tasks:

  • Maintenance of the campus landscape, including general maintenance on plant and shrubbery beds, walkways, exterior stairs, ramps, roads, and parking lots
  • Operation of heavy equipment and digging of ditches, trenches, etc. Campus litter removal
  • Setup of rooms by moving, arranging, and storing furniture for special functions. Setup of tents as needed and ensuring set ups are completed on time according to schedule
  • Restoration of campus to good condition after a storm event. Collaboration with Grounds Team members to remove snow and ice on campus
  • Response to emergency situations and task assignments on short notice

Requirements:

  • Basic knowledge of general landscape maintenance practices and procedures
  • Knowledge and skills with proper pruning practices in maintaining shrubbery
  • Demonstrated skills in using and maintaining power and hand tools
  • Effective communication skills, with the ability to listen and understand oral and written instructions to execute assigned responsibilities
  • Demonstrated ability to complete assigned daily tasks and undertake manual labor
  • Good interpersonal skills with the proven ability to work collaboratively as an effective team player

Compensation: $45,000 - $55,000 per year, depending on experience
