About Your New Role

At Weightmans, we are seeking a skilled and experienced solicitor or barrister to join our National Police team as a Police Solicitor Advocate or Barrister. As a member of our team, you will have the opportunity to work on high-profile cases and make a significant impact in the legal community.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Specialise in acting on behalf of various police forces, protecting their interests and providing expert legal advice.
  • Manage a caseload of civil protective order applications in the Magistrates' courts, including domestic violence protection orders, stalking protection orders, and other related matters.
  • Represent police forces and advocate in disclosure applications to the Family court, ensuring the best possible outcomes for our clients.
  • Present cases in the Magistrates' and County courts, using your exceptional advocacy skills to secure successful results.
  • Provide face-to-face training to groups of police officers, sharing your expertise and knowledge to enhance their skills and confidence.
  • Assist the Team Manager and other team members with their cases, client development, client training, networking, and public speaking, as required.
  • Liaise with various parties, including other solicitors, experts, counsel, and clients, to ensure seamless communication and collaboration.
  • Control Case Manager diary and action lists, ensuring efficient and effective case management.
  • Attend court hearings as appropriate, representing our clients and advocating on their behalf.
  • Draft various documents, including court applications, using your exceptional writing skills and attention to detail.
  • Satisfy standards of client care and compliance with SLAs in accordance with guidelines and directions, ensuring the highest level of service delivery.
  • Complete Client MI procedures, providing valuable insights and data to inform our business decisions.
  • Achieve set financial and chargeable targets, contributing to the success and growth of our team.
  • Comply with relevant rules, policies, and procedures, ensuring our team operates within the bounds of the law and regulatory requirements.
  • Keep up to date with legal developments, staying ahead of the curve and ensuring our team remains at the forefront of legal expertise.
  • Work in accordance with Weightmans' values, upholding our commitment to excellence, integrity, and client satisfaction.

About You

We are looking for a qualified solicitor or barrister with the following skills and experience:

  • Experience of drafting and presenting cases in Court, with a strong track record of success.
  • Strong advocacy skills, with a willingness to learn and undertake this work.
  • Self-motivated and self-directed, with excellent organisation and time management skills.
  • Excellent communication and IT skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team or on own initiative.
  • Ability to work to strict deadlines and targets, with a flexible approach to work and a willingness to travel.
  • Located in Guildford or within easy commuting distance, with experience of advocacy in the Magistrates' Court and advising and acting on behalf of police forces (desirable).
