Digital Records Governance Specialist

Join the British Museum's Legal Services and Information Governance department in a pivotal role, where you will drive records management compliance and develop effective practices to safeguard the Museum's information assets.
About the Role:
The successful candidate will collaborate with the Head of Information Governance to implement the Museum's Information Governance strategy, ensuring adherence to records management legislation, standards, and frameworks. Your primary responsibilities include developing and delivering tailored records management solutions, maintaining the Museum's records management framework, and providing expert advice on records management best practices.
Main Responsibilities:
Key Areas of Responsibility:
- Collaborate with the Head of Information Governance to establish a new records management framework, encompassing policies, standards, procedures, and supporting guidance.
- Review current Museum practices to provide staff with informed advice on managing paper and digital records, highlighting opportunities and risks.
- Ensure senior staff are well-informed about strategic, operational, legislative, and regulatory issues related to records management, facilitating informed decision-making.
- Maintain and manage the Museum's Information Asset Register, advising key individuals across the organization on their responsibilities as information asset owners.
- Work with colleagues to integrate good records management principles into system development and Data Protection Impact Assessment processes.
- Identify and implement improvements to the Museum's record handling and accessioning procedures, collaborating with the Senior Archivist.
- Support the Head of Information Governance in identifying training needs and delivering records management and information governance-related training.
- Act as Deputy Departmental Records Officer.
About You:
To be successful in this role, you will possess:
- A degree-level education or equivalent experience in a relevant field.
- An excellent working knowledge of freedom of information law and legislation (e.g., Public Records Act 1958, Copyrights, Designs and Patents Act 1988).
- Demonstrable experience in an information management or records management environment, handling large volumes of electronic and non-electronic information.
- Proven expertise in developing and implementing records management policies, reports, operating procedures, and guidance.
- Superior organizational and planning skills to coordinate multiple workstreams simultaneously, meeting strict deadlines and prioritizing tasks effectively.
- Exceptional communication, influencing, stakeholder, and change management skills.
- The ability to organize and plan your work schedule to drive change and use creative problem-solving and decision-making skills to achieve tangible results.
