Job Title: Learning Support Assistant - Primary School Role

Job Summary: We are seeking an experienced support worker to work 1:1 with a pupil who is a wheelchair user in a Primary School. The role involves a combination of practical assistance, educational support, and emotional encouragement.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide mobility assistance to the pupil, including helping them navigate the school environment and participate in school activities.
  • Assist with transitions, such as moving from the wheelchair to a chair or from one place to another, if necessary.
  • Support the pupil with any personal care needs, which may include toileting, dressing, or feeding, depending on their level of independence.
  • Maintain the pupil's dignity and privacy at all times.
  • Assist the pupil in participating fully in classroom activities, ensuring they can engage with learning materials and tasks.
  • Provide 1:1 support during lessons, adapting materials or tasks if necessary to meet the pupil's specific needs.
  • Work closely with the teacher to implement any Individual Education Plans (IEPs) or special accommodations.
  • Encourage social interaction with peers, helping the pupil to feel included in group activities.
  • Provide emotional support and encouragement, helping the pupil to build confidence and self-esteem.
  • Act as an advocate for the pupil's needs within the school environment.
  • Maintain regular communication with teachers, special education coordinators, and parents about the pupil's progress and any challenges.

Requirements:

  • Experience in a similar role, particularly working with children with physical disabilities.
  • Knowledge of disability and inclusion, including understanding the challenges faced by wheelchair users.
  • Patience and compassion, with the ability to support the pupil with empathy and understanding.
  • Strong verbal and non-verbal communication skills to interact effectively with the pupil, staff, and parents.
  • Adaptability, with the ability to adjust support strategies as the pupil's needs change.
  • BASIC first aid training, especially in handling situations related to the pupil's specific health needs.
