Job Description:

We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join our team in Lichfield. As a key member of our engineering team, you will be responsible for designing and developing propulsion systems, components, and subassemblies for aerospace applications.

The ideal candidate will have a strong product design and development background, with experience in mechanical design principles, stress analysis, thermodynamics, and materials science. Proficiency in CAD software (SolidWorks) and simulation tools (FEA and CFD) is also required.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop propulsion systems, components, and subassemblies for aerospace applications.
  • Evaluate and enhance the performance and efficiency of existing products.
  • Develop and prototype new products in line with the company's Product Development Processes.
  • Perform detailed engineering analysis to assess new designs' reliability, safety, performance, and risk.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure designs meet customer and regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinate development schedules, communicate design issues throughout the team, and provide input into product specifications.
  • Stay current with industry trends and advancements to integrate new ideas and technologies.
  • Undertake testing and theoretical analysis to ensure product safety and efficacy.
  • Research using mathematical modelling to evaluate new developments and innovations.
  • Liaise with customers and suppliers to resolve design issues.
  • Provide design support at all stages of the design process from initial requirements capture and proposal preparation, through detail design to manufacture and qualification within a multi-disciplinary engineering team.
  • Develop optimised product designs in terms of cost, weight and robustness by challenging existing designs and offering new ideas.
  • Present internally and to customers for design reviews.
  • Ensure engineering excellence across the mechanical engineering discipline through capturing lessons learned, ensuring best practice and creation of standard work.
  • Ensure that design engineering procedures and work instructions are implemented in a consistent and rigorous way.
  • Create and distribute technical publications, including writing, rewriting and editing technical documents.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in mechanical design, preferably in the aerospace industry.
  • Proficient in CAD software (SolidWorks) and simulation tools (FEA and CFD).
  • Strong mechanical design principles, stress analysis, thermodynamics, and materials science knowledge.
  • Experience with aerospace regulations and standards.
  • Excellent 'hands-on' engine/powertrain development experience.
  • Computer literate, familiar with general PC software (e.g. Windows, MS Office).
