Job Title: Underwriter (Trade Finance Division)

UK Export Finance is seeking a highly motivated and process-driven individual to join our Trade Finance Division as an Underwriter. The successful candidate will be responsible for dealing with new business enquiries, reviewing applications for UKEF support, and determining viability.

Main Responsibilities:
  • Dealing with new business enquiries and reviewing applications for UKEF support.
  • Assisting with casework, including the preparation of credit papers and negotiation of transactions.
  • Obtaining a technical knowledge of Export Finance, Trade Finance, and Credit Insurance products.
  • Managing case work, ensuring all relevant communications and documents are correctly processed and stored in the relevant UKEF systems and databases.
  • Continuously developing knowledge of UKEF's products and policies, as well as internal and external factors that impact UKEF's operating environment.
  • Explaining UKEF's products and processes clearly and contributing to policy development and process improvement.
  • Participating in marketing activities, including giving presentations at meetings.
Person Specification:

UK Export Finance is looking for motivated individuals with a desire to learn about the business. Successful candidates will be provided with functional training to enable them to do well in their role, as well as personal development to help them achieve their career ambitions.

Essential Qualifications:
  • 5 GCSE passes (including Maths and English) at Grade 4 (C) or above; or equivalent or relevant demonstrable experience.
Knowledge:
  • A working level understanding of the political, commercial, legal, and risk environment that UKEF operates in and the wider Civil Service.
  • Knowledge of international financing structures and UKEF products.
Skills/Ability:
  • Good written communication skills, including the ability to create good first drafts of documents and presentations for senior managers.
  • Oral communication skills, including the ability to present effectively, clearly, and persuasively.
  • Analytical ability sufficient to understand financial, legal, and policy issues.
  • Able to use MS Office products, in particular Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
  • Highly organised and methodical approach to managing a workload.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective professional relationships.
Experience:
  • Experience of working in teams.
  • Experience in working in an environment where attention to detail is paramount.
  • Experience of working with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Experience of Financial analysis/Credit Risk analysis.
Desirable Qualifications:
  • Relevant professional qualifications, e.g. Diploma in International Trade.
Knowledge:
  • Basic understanding of the principles of Credit risk analysis.
Skills/Ability:
  • Familiarity with Salesforce, estore/SharePoint (not exhaustive).
  • Management skills sufficient to coach and manage junior team members.
  • Ability to understand and interpret financial statements.
  • Loan negotiation skills and familiarity with legal documentation.
Experience:
  • Commercial, banking, financial institution, or legal experience.
Other Requirements:
  • Roles may require UK and/or international travel.
  • Some knowledge of foreign languages would be useful.
