About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Area Ranger to join our team at the National Trust. As a key member of our Countryside Team, you will be responsible for managing a Ranger and a group of dedicated volunteers working across our reserve. Your primary objective will be to deliver the aims of the site management plan and contribute to the wider aspirations of our portfolio.

As the Area Ranger, you will be the lead on the site and will work closely with the Lead Ranger to build strong local relationships with graziers, contractors, partner organisations, and local communities. You will be responsible for ensuring excellent standards of presentation and property maintenance at Sandscale and will work alongside the wider team to undertake visitor engagement and practical conservation work on a regular basis.

You will also play a key role in ensuring the effective communication of our conservation work to a wide range of audiences, both new and existing, through events, guided walks, and engagement with local communities. Additionally, you will be responsible for the management and delivery of the extensive monitoring regime on site, fundamental to the management plan.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage a Ranger and a group of dedicated volunteers working across the reserve
  • Deliver the aims of the site management plan and contribute to the wider aspirations of our portfolio
  • Build strong local relationships with graziers, contractors, partner organisations, and local communities
  • Ensure excellent standards of presentation and property maintenance at Sandscale
  • Undertake visitor engagement and practical conservation work on a regular basis
  • Manage and deliver the extensive monitoring regime on site
Requirements
  • Evidence of experience in land, access, and conservation management, including delivery of small projects and supervision of contractors
  • Experience of developing and delivering work programs to meet conservation and access outcomes
  • Strong team player with experience of leading and line-managing teams of staff and/or volunteers
  • Strong wildlife identification skills and evidence of applied practical experience in coastal habitats
  • Able to work safely, leading on compliance including writing risk assessments as well as safety and environmental procedures
  • Demonstrate a commitment to nature and the outdoors - able to engage with visitors to help them understand the value of our work
