Job Summary

As a Police Officer/Deputy Sheriff with the City of Birmingham, you will play a vital role in maintaining law and order, protecting life and property, and responding to emergency calls. This dynamic role requires a strong understanding of law enforcement methods and state legal codes, as well as the ability to exercise judgment in emergency situations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct routine patrol activities, including patrolling high-problem areas and enforcing state laws and local ordinances.
  • Respond to calls for service, evaluating the scene and determining the appropriate actions to take.
  • Investigate incidents and occurrences, interviewing witnesses and compiling facts.
  • Apprehend and arrest suspects, providing verbal commands and searching for evidence.
  • Handle hazardous situations, alerting emergency response agencies and evacuating persons.
  • Enforce and regulate traffic and motor vehicle rules, issuing warnings and citations.
  • Render medical assistance, evaluating the scene and providing first aid.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a citizen of the United States.
  • Be at least 19 years of age.
  • Have a high school diploma or GED.
  • Pass the ACT WorkKeys Assessment for Law Enforcement Officers.
  • Meet all other requirements outlined in the job description.
Preferred Qualifications

While not required, the following qualifications are preferred:

  • Associate's degree or higher from an accredited college or university.
  • Previous experience in law enforcement or a related field.
Work Environment

This role requires working in a variety of environments, including office settings and external locations such as roadways, businesses, and government buildings. You must be able to use standard office equipment, as well as specialized equipment such as firearms and first aid equipment.

Physical Demands

This role requires moderate to heavy physical exertion, including lifting, climbing, and running. You must be able to subdue or restrain a combative individual and exercise necessary self-defense.
