**Job Overview**

We are seeking an exceptional Synthetic Biology Specialist to support our ambition to establish a National Institute in Engineering biology. As a key member of our Centre for Engineering Biology, Metrology, and Standards team, you will play a vital role in developing innovative tools, materials, and reference standards to address the challenges of reproducibility, traceability, and comparability in Engineering Biology.

**Key Responsibilities**

As a Synthetic Biology Specialist, your primary responsibilities will include:

• Establishing and maintaining a state-of-the-art facility for DNA synthesis and assembly
• Developing and operating the facility to meet the needs of our research programmes
• Conducting research involving the design, synthesis, and assembly of DNA
• Collecting and analysing data, and preparing technical reports for publications and commercial contracts
• Collaborating with industry partners and other stakeholders to deliver RD projects and initiatives

**Requirements**

To be successful in this role, you will need:

• A degree in Chemistry or Biochemistry
• Strong knowledge of solid phase chemical synthesis and DNA assembly
• Practical skills in synthesis, purification, and assembly of biopolymers
• The ability to plan and perform research following standard operating procedures and health and safety regulations
• Experience in molecular cloning and assembly, mass spectrometry and cell-free systems is highly advantageous

**What We Offer**

NPL offers a competitive salary of £60,000 - £80,000 per annum, depending on experience, plus a range of benefits including pension scheme, generous annual leave, and access to training and development opportunities.

**Location**

This role is based at our Teddington site in South West London, with easy access to central London by public transport.

**Working Arrangements**

We offer a hybrid working model, allowing you to balance remote and office work to suit your needs.
