Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Qualified Teacher of the Deaf to provide specialist skills within the Hearing Implant multidisciplinary team. The post holder will be responsible for managing the support provided to patients, carers, and educational settings in their assessment and care pre and post implantation.

Main Duties

  • To be part of a team of Teachers of the Deaf based at St Michael's Hospital, Bristol, providing high-quality specialist input to the regional specialist West of England Hearing Implant Programme.
  • To work collaboratively with the Programme Speech and Language Therapists, Audiologists, and Clinical Psychologist in assessment, joint report writing, and goal setting.
  • To assess and monitor patient's listening and communication, working closely with colleagues and local professionals, during the assessment phase.
  • To provide high-quality, knowledgeable information on hearing loss, its impact on communication, and expectations and progress following implantation.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Training

Essential

  • To be a Qualified Teacher of the Deaf.
  • To possess a full UK driving licence.

Desirable

  • To possess a CACDP signing qualification.

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Knowledge of child development and language acquisition.
  • Experience of working with deaf children of different ages and in different settings.
  • Experience in training other professionals using well-developed presentation skills.
  • Experience in working effectively as part of a team and with other professionals.

Desirable

  • Experience of working with deaf babies and supporting their carers from diagnosis.
  • Experience of working with cochlear implanted children.
  • Evidence of research and/or service development.

Skills and Abilities

Essential

  • Competent in the use of information technology.
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills.
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work with a high level of autonomy to assess, monitor, and give advice to patients, families, and professionals.

Desirable

  • Ability to apply knowledge and analytical skills to all aspects of work with paediatric cochlear implantees.

Aptitudes

Essential

  • Excellent inter-personal and communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate complex information in a sensitive, empathic, and professional manner.
  • The post holder should be capable of completing the duties and responsibilities outlined in this job description without direct supervision.
  • Able to work well under pressure and prioritise the workload.
