About the Role

Haines Watts (Western) Limited is seeking a highly skilled Senior Bookkeeper / Business Services Assistant to join our team in Exeter. As a key member of our accounting team, you will be responsible for providing exceptional financial services to our clients.

Key Responsibilities
  • Process payments, invoices, income, and receipts, and enter data into accounting software or spreadsheets from clients' physical records.
  • Reconcile clients' bank accounts and analyze their income and expenditure correctly in the profit and loss account and balance sheet.
  • Regularly monitor accounts payable and receivable to ensure they are up-to-date and accurate within the accounting software.
  • Prepare VAT returns for a range of clients and review their bookkeeping and VAT treatment where necessary.
  • Manage a portfolio of clients and ensure all VAT records are requested, and returns prepared and submitted within deadlines.
  • Prepare monthly/quarterly management accounts for clients of varying sizes, while gaining a good understanding of each client worked on.
  • Prepare monthly/quarterly accounting journals relating to the management accounts and any additional journals, including payroll journals.
  • Produce financial statements, including P&L accounts, cash flows, variance analysis, and commentaries.
  • Communicate with clients regarding queries.
  • Prepare payment runs to pay clients' staff wages and supplier payments.
Requirements
  • Minimum 2-3 years of experience within industry or an accounts practice, including bookkeeping experience.
  • AAT qualified.
  • Experience working on Xero software (preferably Xero certified).
  • Experience preparing and filing VAT returns through accounting software.
  • Experience preparing management accounts and being confident analyzing data to produce reports and working papers to support the management accounts.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, with direct liaison with clients.
  • Positive team player with a can-do attitude.
  • Accurate data entry skills with excellent knowledge of Excel, Word, and Outlook, and good IT skills.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Passionate about great service to provide a high level of client care.
  • Experience managing a client portfolio would be desirable.
