Nuclear Safety Case Lead

As a key member of the Holtec International team, you will lead a group of engineers in producing fault studies and internal/external hazards safety case for the Generic Design Assessment (GDA) of the SMR-160 small modular reactor. This role requires leadership experience in the production of nuclear safety case documentation to meet UK regulatory expectations and experience with leading and managing technical teams.
The Faults and Hazards Team Lead will report through the Head of Licensing to the GDA Project Director and will build a strong relationship with the US SMR Deterministic Safety Analysis (DSA) Lead. The UK GDA is a critical element for commercial deployment of SMR-160s worldwide, and this role provides a unique opportunity in an exciting emerging technology and energy marketplace.
Key Responsibilities:
- Managing/leading a technical team.
- Fault Studies and Severe Accidents assessments - evaluations of the reactor core, reactor coolant system, engineered safety features, containment, and radiological releases associated with anticipated operational occurrences, design basis accidents, and beyond design basis accidents.
- Hazard identification studies, qualitative and quantitative hazard assessments.
- Providing line management and coordinating the team, being responsible for coaching and mentoring to develop the team and the individuals in technical skills and in personal skills enabling them to deliver.
- Interact with regulators to explain analytical methods and models for the spectrum of fault studies that are applicable to the SMR-160 reactor design, and to explain qualitative or quantitative hazard assessments.
- Support UK team development, participating in interviews.
Requirements:
- Degree qualified in an engineering or science related discipline.
- Must possess excellent credentials in principles of fault studies and hazard assessments.
- Strong understanding of thermal hydraulic behaviour of nuclear reactors under steady state and transient conditions.
- Experience in developing nuclear safety cases for specified discipline.
- Ability to work independently and balance competing priorities.
- Strong interpersonal skills. Able to engage credibly within and external to the business.
- Strong presentation and communication skills – able to present at multiple organisational levels and to external regulatory stakeholders.
- A credible decision maker, able to create confidence through crafting of strong justifications and arguments.
- Eligible to work under 10 CFR Part 810.
