Machinist - Production Specialist

This role reports directly to the Production Supervisor at MacTaggart Scott. The purpose of the role is to produce high-quality machine parts by operating manual machines or programming, setting up, and operating computer numerical control (CNC) machines.
Key Responsibilities:
- Plan machining by studying work orders, engineering plans, materials, specifications, and machining parameters; interpreting dimensions and tolerances.
- Program mills and lathes by entering instructions, including zero and reference points; setting tool registers, offsets, compensation, and conditional switches; calculating requirements, including basic math, geometry, and trigonometry; proving part programs.
- Set-up mills and lathes by installing and adjusting three- and four-jaw chucks, vices, tools, attachments, collets, gears, etc.
- Load feed mechanism by lifting stock into position.
- Verify settings by measuring positions, first-run part, and sample work pieces; adhering to international standards.
- Maintain specifications by observing drilling, grooving, and cutting, including turning, facing, knurling, and thread chasing operations; taking measurements; detecting malfunctions; troubleshooting processes; adjusting and reprogramming controls; sharpening and replacing worn tools; adhering to quality assurance procedures and processes.
- Maintain safe operations by adhering to safety procedures and regulations.
- Maintain equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs.
- Keep work area clean and tidy, free from hazards.
- Maintain continuity among work shifts by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and continuing needs.
- Document actions by completing production and quality logs.
Requirements:
- Experience in a similar role.
- Experience of reading engineering/technical drawings and making to specification.
- Experience in editing/proving CNC programs.
- Excellent communications skills.
- Proficient in using a variety of measuring equipment.
- Comfortable working in a busy environment and able to use initiative and plan in advance.
- Flexible and adaptable to change.
- Self-motivated with a good work ethic and attention to detail is essential.
