Job Purpose

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Develop and implement a comprehensive diagnostic strategy, ensuring accurate testing and reporting of samples.
  2. Manage a team of experts in bacteriology, parasitology, and virology, prioritizing and delegating tasks to meet service objectives.
  3. Utilize specialist knowledge and experience to develop and deliver novel diagnostic methods, improving sensitivity and accuracy.
  4. Collaborate with research scientists and commercial companies on scholarly and commercial projects, driving innovation and growth.
  5. Manage the diagnostic laboratory budget, monitoring spending and taking remedial action as necessary.
  6. Develop and improve staff capacity, integrating the three disciplines into an effective and efficient service unit.
  7. Contribute to the management of the diagnostic service and School as a whole, through membership of relevant committees and groups.
  8. Determine priorities and allocate resources to meet planned objectives of the infectious disease service and the requirements of the entire veterinary diagnostic service.
  9. Deliver teaching and training, imparting knowledge, skill, and guidance to undergraduate and postgraduate students, scientists, clinical scholars, nurses, and technical staff.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Essential

  • A degree or equivalent in a related subject.
  • Working knowledge of diagnostic virology, bacteriology, and parasitology, sufficient to manage staff in each of these areas.
  • Knowledge of relevant health and safety issues, as well as University policies and procedures.

Desirable

  • A postgraduate qualification in Biological Sciences or Virology/Microbiology.
  • Extensive theoretical and practical knowledge/skills in a wide range of diagnostic and research techniques within virology; molecular biology techniques, tissue culture, assays, and virus purification.

Skills

  • An ability to interpret diagnostic findings and develop novel test modalities.
  • Capacity to think strategically, integrating commercial laboratory activities with research opportunities.
  • Ability to impart knowledge and expertise through training of commercial partners and international scientists.
  • Ability to independently devise, execute, and interpret experimental work, using specialized equipment and resources.
  • Excellent organizational, planning, and problem-solving skills, together with communication and supervisory abilities.
  • Extensive IT skills, including expert systems such as Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).

Experience

  • Significant diagnostic laboratory experience.
  • Experience of working independently.
  • Extensive practical experience in molecular and serological testing, along with classical virology, bacteriology, or parasitology.
  • Extensive IT experience, focusing on scientific application software and expert systems.

Terms and Conditions
