The British Museum seeks a highly skilled Fire Safety Specialist to join its Estates and Capital Projects team. As a key member of the team, you will provide technical fire safety advice and drive operational change and continuous improvement in fire safety management across the organisation.
This role is an excellent opportunity for a fire safety expert who thrives on working in the cultural sector. You will be responsible for ensuring that there is a strong and pragmatic fire safety culture across the Museum's diverse operations, supporting significant capital development over the coming years.
Key areas of responsibility include:
- Providing specialist fire safety technical advice and being the operational lead for fire safety arrangements at The British Museum
- Driving improvements in relation to legal and code of practice compliance with the Regulatory Reform (Fire) Order and ensuring that best practice is adopted
- Ensuring that operational arrangements to protect staff, public, collections and property from fire (and related flood) are in place
- Making decisions about fire safety related issues as part of programmed, ad hoc and capital project works. These are likely to affect multiple stakeholders and functions across the Museum.
- Enhancing and promoting a positive staff culture that affects thinking and behaviours about fire safety across the whole museum.
About you:
We are looking for an experienced fire safety specialist, with consolidated experience in a similar role, ideally in a heritage environment. You should have fire safety-related qualifications, and a sound knowledge of Building Regulations and BS 9999. Membership of the IFE or professional standards bodies and/or a technical background in either Mechanical, Electrical, Building Fabric Maintenance, or Fire Engineering are desired.
You should be a strong decision-maker and influencer, with outstanding communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
About the job:
This full-time permanent position offers a competitive salary of £48,144 per annum, plus benefits including annual leave allowance, membership of the civil service defined benefit pension scheme, free entry to a wide range of museums and exhibitions, participation in private and public Museum activities, interest-free travel, bicycle, and rental deposit loans, professional and personal development opportunities, Employee Assistance Programme, and discounts on food and gift shop purchases.
Additional details:
We offer a flexible way of working that allows our employees to work remotely in a way that suits them and the organisation. We welcome questions and conversations at interview stage about how flexible working could work for you.
The Museum adheres to the HMG Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) for pre-employment screening of Civil Servants.
