University Sussex Hospitals (East) are seeking an outstanding specialist doctor to join our team of general and obstetric anaesthetists, working in a fantastic area of the country. Our anaesthetic department is dynamic and has an excellent reputation for teaching, research, and innovation for the benefit of our population.

Main Duties of the Job

Due to the nature of the work undertaken, experience in the delivery of anaesthesia for a wide range of procedures is expected. We undertake a large variety of work and flexibility is important. Appropriate support and training can be given to expand the scope of practice of the successful candidate by mutual agreement.

As an expanding service, there are plenty of opportunities for leading service development and quality improvement projects and experience/enthusiasm for these areas would be welcomed. We are a large teaching department with an associated medical school, so we expect all permanent senior staff to participate in the education and training of medical and non-medical colleagues.

Job Plan and Responsibilities

The job plan will consist of flexible general lists based at either the Princess Royal or Royal Sussex County Hospital, which will vary in nature from week to week depending on the interest and skill set of the successful individual. There is no on-call commitment planned with this post, but in the future, out-of-hours work may be scheduled by mutual agreement.

Participation in monthly department governance meetings and regular generalist meetings will be included within the SPA allocation of this post. In addition, there will be responsibilities for supervising and assessing trainees and other members of the multi-disciplinary team.

Essential criteria include a basic medical degree, full registration and a licence to practice with the General Medical/Dental Council, and completed a minimum of 12 years medical/dental work since obtaining a primary medical/dental qualification.

Professional values and behaviours, skills, and knowledge are also essential, including practising with professional values and behaviours expected of all doctors as set out in GMC Good Medical Practice and the Generic Professional Capabilities Framework.

Leadership and teamworking, patient safety and quality improvement, safeguarding vulnerable groups, education and training, and research and scholarship are also essential criteria.
