Gastroenterology Consultant

The successful candidate will provide high-quality gastroenterology services, including outpatient, inpatient, and endoscopic care. They will be responsible for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of gastrointestinal illnesses and will work closely with the multidisciplinary team to ensure seamless patient care.
The Consultant will participate in the ongoing development of the gastroenterology service, adhering to national and NICE frameworks. They will also be responsible for the professional supervision and management of junior medical staff, ensuring compliance with local employment and human resource policies.
The postholder will engage in medical audit and other clinical effectiveness activities, fostering improvements in quality and standards. They will also contribute to undergraduate, postgraduate, and continuing medical education activities, both locally and nationally.
The Gastroenterology Service provides comprehensive care for patients with gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary disorders. The service includes diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopies, an in-hours bleed service, and weekly multidisciplinary team meetings for hepatobiliary and upper GI cancers.
The successful candidate will work closely with the team to develop services that utilize the advantages of being a small district general hospital, while adhering to national guidance and best practices.
The job plan will be a prospective agreement that sets out the Consultant's duties, responsibilities, and objectives for the coming year. It will cover all aspects of the Consultant's professional practice, including clinical work, teaching, research, education, and managerial responsibilities.
The postholder will be responsible for gastroenterology inpatient beds, patients referred for an opinion from other consultants and wards, and will participate in the 1 in 11 Consultant general medical emergency on-call rota.
The Clinical Director will review the work programme at the start of the appointment to ensure consistency with other colleagues' timetables. An individual mentoring programme will be developed to provide ongoing assistance, support, and development in the role.
The Trust has the required arrangements in place to ensure that all doctors have an annual appraisal with a trained appraiser and supports doctors going through the revalidation process.
