Cardiff, Cardiff, United Kingdom The Economist Full time

About The Economist

The Economist is a world-leading organisation that promotes competitive markets and tackles unfair behaviour. Our work is wide-ranging, ambitious, and often new and challenging.

Role Overview

We are seeking a Senior Economics Director to play a critical role in our Economics Team. As a senior leader, you will be responsible for providing economic leadership on complex and important merger, markets, enforcement, and digital regulation cases.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide guidance on individual cases from their early stages, particularly those raising complex economic issues.
  • Ensure a 'culture of economics' is maintained, where economists share information on cases and provide analytical support to each other.
  • Be accountable for ensuring the optimal allocation of economic resources across the CMA's projects.
  • Grow, lead, maintain, and develop the Economics Team's culture.
  • Play an active role in the ongoing corporate management and development of the organisation.
  • Represent the CMA externally, building strong relationships with counterparts, including competition and regulatory authorities, Government Departments, economic academics, and consultants.

Requirements

  • Be an excellent, senior-level competition economist with impressive academic and professional qualifications and experience.
  • Have an outstanding track record of providing economic advice on complex cases, studies, and enquiries.
  • Bring an in-depth knowledge of competition and regulatory economics and current issues in the field.
  • Have the authority and ability to debate economic analysis with foremost academic economists.
  • Have extensive experience of building and leading teams.

What We Offer

In return, The Economist offers a diverse, rewarding, and stimulating work environment. We provide generous benefits, including an excellent pension scheme, at least 25 days leave (increasing to 30 over five years), and generous maternity/paternity leave provision. You can also take advantage of interest-free season ticket loans, a cycle to work scheme, our employee assistance programme, and flexible working options.
