Swim Buddy Role Description
Location: Surbiton
Time commitment: Approx. 3 hours on a Thursday
At SeeAbility, we specialise in supporting people with learning disabilities and autism, who may also have sight loss, to realise their goals each and every day.
We encourage people with disabilities to challenge what they expect from life, from themselves and from wider society.
Registered as The Royal School for the Blind, SeeAbility is one of the oldest disability charities in the UK and has pioneered specialist support for over 220 years.
What you'll be doing
As a Swim Buddy, you will be joining the people we support in the water, helping them have fun and encouraging them to swim and play in the pool.
One of our Support Workers will always be there for guidance and they will be responsible for the personal care of your buddy, but they may stay on the side during the time you're in the water.
Skills required
- To be confident in the water and a good swimmer.
- To be reliable and punctual.
- To have a good sense of humour and be enthusiastic.
- To be kind, empathetic and friendly.
To ensure the safety of the people we support, we require a DBS check and two satisfactory references before a volunteer role is confirmed. As you will be volunteering directly with vulnerable individuals, you will also be required to undertake safeguarding training, as well as any training which is specific to the role.
The difference you'll make
Becoming one of Swim Buddies will provide opportunities for those we support to increase their confidence, boost their mood and keep fit.
Benefits to the volunteer
This is a fantastic opportunity to give something positive back to society and have a direct impact on people's lives. Being a Swim Buddy is a great way to get out and about, exercise, and help others.
