About the Role

NHS Blood and Transplant is a leading organization in the field of tissue and eye services, and we are seeking a highly skilled and experienced individual to join our team as a Tissue Retrieval Team Lead.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist the Tissue and Eye Services Manager in ensuring a functional tissue donation service is delivered at a local team level, including roster management, stock management, mentoring, staff training, and performing tissue retrievals from deceased donors in various settings.
  • Lead the retrieval of tissues, including eyes, bones, tendons, skin, and heart valves, from deceased donors.
  • Be a proactive member of the Tissue and Eye Services team and contribute to the provision of a 7-day-a-week tissue retrieval service.
  • Ensure efficient working and productivity, maintaining accurate records, and adhering to Good Manufacturing Practice and Health and Safety requirements.
  • Travel extensively, including overnight stays, and spend time away from base when required, with appropriate notice.
  • Work a 7.5-hour shift, typically from 08:00-16:00, 10:00-18:00, or 13:00-21:00, on a rotational basis, including weekends, with flexibility in working patterns.
Training and Development

NHS Blood and Transplant takes training seriously, and your personal development is our priority. Our comprehensive training program will cover:

  • Eye and Tissue Retrieval, including bone, skin, heart valves, tendons, and arteries.
  • Vehicle Familiarization, including training in driving NHSBT liveried vehicles and a driving assessment.
  • Mortuary Work, acclimation to working in mortuary settings and with deceased patients.
  • Regulatory Knowledge, understanding Human Tissue Authority regulations, consent requirements, and the Human Tissue Act.
  • Tissue Retrieval, training in dissection and tissue removal, with basic anatomy instruction.
  • Clinical Pathway Insight, an overview of the process from referral and consent to tissue preparation for transplantation.
  • Virology Testing, basic understanding of virology testing on deceased donors.
  • Support Functions, training in stock ordering, retrieval kit preparation, and other support areas.
  • Competency Assessments, completion of competency assessments in eye and tissue retrieval around the 6-month mark.
  • Leadership, through a blended approach of online, face-to-face training, and workplace experience, supported by your line manager.
About You

We are looking for an individual with:

  • Substantial experience working in a busy clinical area or GMP laboratory.
  • Experience of handling deceased patients, blood/blood products/tissue.
  • Experience working unsupervised or supervising others in a clinical environment or regulated laboratory/manufacturing environment meeting GMP standards.
  • Experience of supporting the professional development of others while maintaining own development.
  • An understanding of Good Manufacturing Practice and Health and Safety requirements.
  • Computer literacy and experience in the use of a range of IT programs.
Qualifications and Training

We require:

  • Possession of a degree in a healthcare/biological science or equivalent management/leadership qualification or equivalent level of knowledge gained through formal training and experience working within a blood or tissue banking environment.
  • Postgraduate qualification, such as a British Blood Transfusion Society (BBTS) specialist certificate, management qualification, or Tissue Banking qualification, or equivalent knowledge gained through formal training and experience in a blood or tissue banking environment.
  • Possession of a valid driving license allowing the holder to drive in the UK.
  • Demonstrate commitment to own Continued Professional Development (CPD).
